The Nebula class is an offshoot of the Galaxy Class. Intended as a cheaper, less cost-intensive platform than the Galaxy, the Nebula was designed to supplement the Galaxys' limited numbers in the upgrade of the venerable Ambassador Class and New Orleans Class ships. Many parts of the Nebula are ripped directly from the Galaxy class: the saucer, the warp nacelles, and the warp core, along with a few of the computer systems. However, there are many more differences. For instance, the saucer section cannot seperate on the Nebula class. Many systems which are hard-locked into the Galaxys' design are included in the Nebula only as plug-in components. The large modules above the stern contain different systems and are installed modularly dependent on the Nebula's current mission. There are several different modules, each installed for a specific mission profile, for instance, for an exploration mission, a sensor suite would be installed; for an evac mission, extra living quarters would be installed; for a combat mission, a weapons array would be installed, etc. While this feature makes the Nebula class more mission-specific, it also allows for greater adaptability. Future modifications can be made with very little structural reworking or cost. While the Nebulas are seemingly less capable than the Galaxys, their adaptability and success have made them a powerful platform whose projected service will cover nearly a century. |
While Soyuz class ships are often mistaken for Miranda Class ships, the differences are more numerous than obvious. The aft cargo hold and shuttle bay of the Soyuz class is considerably larger than the Miranda class. The Soyuz's shields were also upgraded to make it a more formidable warship. Most notably, the Soyuz class has large weapon suites protruding both above and below the aft quarterdeck. These added weapons give the Soyuz an advantage over the Miranda class in its firepower. | ||||||||||||||||
The Excelsior project | |||||||||||||||||
The Excelsior project was commenced in the 2260s. The five year exploration missions by the Constitution-class starships had highlighted the shortcomings in starship-mounted facilities. On more than one occasion even starships such as Captain James T. Kirk's Enterprise were overwhelmed by the unimaginable factors in the outer reaches of unexplored space. the Advanced starship Design Bureau (ASDB) put forward the preliminary designs for a starship with almost twice the mass of a Constitution-class, and more than twice the resources. By the 2270s, a new factor had been added to the project: Transwarp Drive. Transwarp drive was to be Starfleet's attempt to break the Warp 10 barrier - allowing a starship to travel to almost anywhere instantaneously. New engineering advances allowed the designing of a warp core reactor with over 10 000 times the power of the Constitution-class equivalent. Soon it became apparent that NX 2000 was to be the testbed for more than just new sensor systems and neww engines. By the time the spaceframe was under construction in the late 2270s, nearly every starship system to be installed in her was to be new and experimental. N.X. 2000, U.S.S. Excelsior, was launched on Stardate 8095.5 (Earth Calender Year 2284) from the San Francisco Orbital Yards. Excelsior entered her period of testing, which would last for 6 years. Every possible test was carried out by the Research and Development team onboard N.X. 2000. Her computer was tested for speed and number of systems it could run autonomously. The Artificial intelligence installed in the computers was of a whole new generation and Excelsior was the first starship that could fly herself. Excelsior was assigned the best that starfleet could offer her: Captain styles, the captain who had more test hours than any other at that time, now currently the Head of Starfleet Research and Development. Commander Michael Hawkins was the Chief Engineerand Transwarp specialist, briefly replaced by the more field-experienced Captain Montgomery Scott for a brief period in 2285, Hawkins oversaw the engines of Excelsior until the completion of the testing phase in 2290. The Transwarp project never achieved it's aim of attaining speeds of over Warp 10, however it did directly lead to a new generation of warp Drive engines. In 2290 the Excelsior was given her N.C.C. designation and command was handed over to Captain Hikaru Sulu. U.S.S. Albion is the ninth member of the Excelsior class. Launched on Stardate 11501.5, she is the latest operational addition to Starfleet's newest starship class. The Excelsior class is the fastest, most powerful and the most versatile in the Starfleet. She continues in the tradition of exploration and discovery established by the Constitution class vessels of thirty years ago, following in the footsteps of Cochrane's first warp drive ship, the Phoenix. Albion is 511.25 metres long, has a beam of 195.64 metres, a height of 86.76 metres and weighs 2 350 000 tonnes. The basic hull structure is fabricated from tritanium/duranium alloys. Albion was built at Starfleet's Luna Orbital Yards on Stardate 11501.5 (Earth year 2298). Twelve Excelsior class starships have been built to date by Starfleet. These twelve are comprised of nine variant one Excelsiors and three variant two. Excelsior was the first variant one, launched in 2284 as N.X. 2000. Enterprise was the first variant two, being launched on Stardate 9715. Albion is the ninth operational ship in the Excelsior class. Albion is the most advanced ship in the fleet, utilising technology tested in Excelsior and upgraded by Enterprise 1701-B. The Excelsior class U.S.S. Albion supports a compliment of 750 crew members, and 130 mission specialists that have joined the ship for specific projects, this brings the ship's entire compliment to 880. The ship is capable of independant operation for about three years without refueling. The primary mission of the Albion is exploration and research in the Beta Quadrant, being superbly equipped for both. N.C.C. 6212's secondary mission is to oversee missions into the Klingon Empire to aid in the post-Praxis clean up operations. For those occasions when a show of force is unavoidable, the ship is equipped with an impressive array of defensive weaponry. U.S.S. Albion is commanded by Captain Ilani. Albion has been assigned to the Beta Quadrant to explore, chart and scrutinise the border worlds that, up until recently, existed in the Neutral Zone. There are over 100 worlds for her to explore upon her arrival although this mission is not foreseen to last more than 1 year, including all of the aforementioned secondary tasks concerning the Klingon Empire. Albion is under the command of Starbase 369 and is at the full disposal of Admiral Tanis, should the need arise for a platform for exploration, diplomacy or defence. Albion represents the cutting edge of operational in-the-field Federation technology and thus is a spectacular ambassador to the Federation's one hundred and thirty years of existence. | |||||||||||||||||
